Woman, 25, arrested for dumping her baby in toilet

Police in the Upper River Region (URR) have arrested one Jainaba Jaiteh a native of Allunhareh village in the Fulladou District for reportedly dumping her newly born baby in the toilet; The Point has been reliably informed.

Mrs. Jaiteh has been charged with infanticide and arraigned before the Basse Magistrates’ Court. She was granted bail in the sum of D50, 000, but at the time of going to the press, she was unable to fulfil the bail condition.  

This incident came after the husband had rejected Mrs. Jaiteh’s pregnancy, making many people believed that it could have warranted her dumping the baby in the toilet.

She was arrested on Friday 8th of December 2017, weeks after the dumping of her baby, people familiar with the matter said.

“The authorities in the region who were at the scene at Allunhareh were only able to recover the remains of the baby,” our source added.

Efforts to reach the assistance public relations officer (PRO) of The Gambia Police Force (GPF) Assistance Superintendent Foday Conta proved futile.

The Regional Social Welfare officer for URR, Kebba Jatta, described the incident as “unfortunate”, thus called for concerted efforts in arresting such kinds of heinous crimes in the country’s farthest region.

Jatta added that they would continue on their efforts in sensitising the communities of URR on the significance of upgrading our children and protecting them from all forms of violence.
