Speaking to The Point reporter at his Brikama office yesterday, Ousman Muhammed Cham said people need to take local government elections as serious as any other election in the country. “We need to elect the right people in councils to enable their contribution immensely towards the development of our communities and the country at large,”
Mr. Cham said their mandate is to oversee the activities of the council until after election, saying they were assigned by the president following dissolving of Area Councils pending the election.
A former ChildFund West and Central regional director, Cham said he and his team are working on improving the council to level the ground for those who will be coming to take up the responsibility after the election. “We will prepare a report that will include clear recommendations for the improvement of the Council’s management.”
He said his priority resource mobilisation not only based on internal revenue but also exploring possibilities on how they can tap other resource beyond the Council’s boundaries.
Mr. Cham emphasised that it is significance for people to know where and how their paid taxes are spent, saying, “There should be a clear communication about how the money collected is used for to ensure transparency.”
