The country representative of the Westminster
Foundation for Democracy, Madi Jobarteh, has said every citizen should have the
responsibility of holding their leaders accountable if they want rapid progress
and development as a country.
Accountability, he said, is the only difference between progress and failure, explaining that accountability determines whether we are moving forward, backward or stagnant.
The human rights activist was speaking during the Democracy Dialogue Forum organised by the Global Youth Innovation Network (GYIN) Gambia Chapter in collaboration with the Network of Freelance Journalists (NFJ) The Gambia.
The outspoken activist who was commenting on the topic: “The Gambia We Want” commended Hon. Halifa Sallah, lawmaker for Serrekunda Central for donating dustbins to communities. However, he added it is not his responsibility to donate dustbins for the fact that they are paying him to serve them and not to take from his salary and give back donations like dustbins.
According to him, there are mayors and councillors that are elected to manage Kanifing Municipality. “Since after independence, KMC did not provide much needed development within the municipality. Do we know how much KMC collects on taxes a day, month and a year,” he queried.
“It is an insult to see how some streets are in Ebo Town for the fact that people and the general public are failing in their role in holding their leaders to account. If we want a better Gambia; The Gambia we all deserve; it has to be founded on accountability regardless of political parties, affiliations or any section of the society.”
