The villagers of Karantaba Dutokoto in Central River Region-North district of Sami say they have been facing acute water shortage for the past two years as this has been compounded by low water supply from the village’s only water tank.

In a recent interview, the village’s Alkalo Solo Ceesay said they struggle on daily basis to access potable drinking water for their survival, saying sometimes they encountered extreme difficulty to access water for their household consumption.

“We started encountering this water shortage some two years ago and since then, accessing water became a problem and sometimes only five compounds get water supply regularly,’’ he said.

A community with a population of over 600 people, Mr. Ceesay said they decided on how many liters of water each compound should fetch every day, saying some compounds get 20 liters gallon while some would get half of that depending on the compound size.

Binta Suwareh, a housewife said there are 36 compounds in the community with taps but they are all out of use. “We are calling on government and individuals to come to our aid and provide potable drinking water in our community.”
