(UTGJDA), Saturday held a day capacity building training on debate and public
speaking for member.
President, Amie Fye said the training is organized for students in the School of Journalism to understand the importance of debate and public speaking in journalism. She said debating is part of their lives as journalists and they must debate when it is necessary to get out the best in anything they do.
According Jainaba Sonko, 2rd president of the Association, debating has benefited her in her career in many ways, saying through debating, she earned a scholarship to study any course at the University. “As a journalist, one must understand how to defend him/herself in debate. Debating gives you the chance to enhance your speaking skills.”
She said research is very vital in their work as journalists and debating gives them the chance to get used to researching on any given topic. “The capacity building will help me in so many ways and I believe with what I have learnt today, I’ll be able to speak at any given audience and defend my topic.”
