University of The Gambia recently held its traditional orientation ceremony for
its freshmen into the different disciplines of the University.
The ceremony, which took place at the University’s faculty of law in Kanifing was attended by the Deans of all the UTG schools.
Registrar Lamin Taro reminded the students that they now joined the community of scholars in the institution of higher learning. “Your journey through primary to secondary education has ended and another journey of a University student has just begun for you.”
He said students are key stakeholders in the development of the country, adding that the lucky ones to be enrolled should use the gigantic opportunity and serve the nation to their best.
He congratulated the new students for being able to gain admission into the UTG from thousands of aspiring candidates.
Mr. Taro urged the students to take the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the institution and get to know their lecturers and fellow students.
He emphasised that if there is no improvement to the next semester, the students will go on probation for one year. “The university is headed by a Vice Chancellor, who is assisted by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, registrar, director of finance and these are what we referred to as principle officers of the University.”
Samba Faal, acting Dean of the School of Journalism and Digital Media expressed hope that the students of the School of Journalism could achieve beyond expectations if they focus on what they want; aim higher and be serious on their studies.
Acting Dean of the School of Business and Public Administration, Alagie Fanneh urged the new students to spend their time wisely and to avoid social media consuming much of their space.
Dr Momodou Jain, Associate Professor and Deputy Vice Chancellor of the university’s administration called on the new students to redouble their efforts so as to achieve their dreams.
