Ahmed Bensouda described by many as the new darling of the United Democratic
Party (UDP) has been duly elected mayor of the Kanifing Municipal Council in
the 12 May Mayoral Election on Saturday.
Opinion polls had predicted his victory and this was confirmed by the Independent Electoral Commission on Sunday morning after officially announcing the results which saw Besouda leading, while Rambo Jatta, the APRC’s candidate in second place with over eleven thousand (11000) votes difference.
Talib scored 29, 325 of the total votes casted in the municipality while his closest contestant Rambo had 17,392 votes.
After a well laid down manifesto and campaign trail, the people of Kanifing Municpality have given him the platform to deliver as promised.
It is without an iota of doubt that he is now the darling of the UDP loyalists and this can be traced back to the party’s primaries for the mayoral seat when he won convincingly.
In a statement made via social media after being officially declared as the winner in the Kanifing Municipal Council’s Mayoral Election, Talib expressed his gratitude to the entire municipality for exercising their democratic rights in a peaceful manner. He thanked his fellow contestants and the voters for their maturity, noting they are all winners.
“I’d like to thank all the voters that participated in this election, today we are all winners in this democratic process. We have proven that the fundamentals of democracy are sound, I urge you all to celebrate responsibly and peacefully” the mayor elect said.
Bensouda thanked his campaign team for a yearlong hard-work and says it’s now time to work.
I thank all the candidates that participated in this election. I congratulate all the mayors and the moyoress (sic) and the councilors that have successfully been elected,” Talib said. “I respect you for your efforts. A time has come to move our region into an era of prosperity. We will together make a better KMC.”
