Gambia’s National U-20 team returned to Banjul yesterday after their shock exit from the 2019 Africa U-20 Youth Championship qualifiers. The Scorpions were defeated 2-0 by Benin in the second leg encounter played in Cotonou on Sunday.

As reported on the GFF website, Coach Matarr Mboge and his charges were apparently intimidated by the host upon arrival in Cotonou and also denied them entry into the stadium for first day training.

The country’s football governing body said the team was shown hostility at its height and resorted to shorten its training period on the eve of the match after Benin forcibly also entered the stadium claiming to start their session on time.

Gambia however kept their composure and went cool into the weekend game at the Stade De Amite. Match proceedings began with a vociferous roaring of the home fans aimed at silencing the visitors.

The match nonetheless ended 2 nil to Benin and 3-2 on aggregate thus ending Gambia’s hopes to progress to the next phase of the qualifiers.
