U-17 intensifies preparation

The Gambia national U-17 team is eager to know their opponents in the forth-coming WAFU tournament to be hosted in Senagal in September.

The draw for WAFU Zone A U-17 football tournament is set for July 31 in Dakar.

The Zonal U-17 tournaments according to CAF will also be used as qualifiers for the 2019 Total Africa U-17 Youth championship in Tanzania.

The Gambia is in WAFU Zone A alongside host nation Senegal, Guinea Conakry, Giunea Bissau, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Cape Verde and Mauritania.

The draw for the tournament is slated for Tuesday in the Senegalese capital Dakar, where the Gambia is expected to be present at the balloting.

Dakar and Mbour are the two host cities for the tournament, which will kick off from September 2 to 11 this year.

Meanwhile, the Gambia Football Federation stated that the country is ready to actively take-part in the forth-coming tournament and eventually qualify for the 2019 Total Africa U-17 Youth championship to be hosted in Tanzania in 2019.

Baby Scorpions head coach Abdoulie Bojang has intensified his preparation with daily trainings at the National Technical Training Centre in Old Yundum where a final selection of 30 players has been done after a pre-selection process.

The players will undergo a mandatory MRI test to determine their rightful ages before entering the tournament.

The Gambia won the WAFU U-20 football tournament in Liberia and a repeat of that feat is the task for the Baby Scorpions at the forth-coming junior tournament in Senegal.
