Officials of The Gambia Tourism Board –GTB-and their stakeholders have recently embarked on a daylong re-cleaning exercise of the beach within the Tourism Development Area (TDA).

Speaking to journalists during the exercise, GTB director of licenses and quality control Momodou Bah said the exercise was part of their commitment to ensure that the beaches are regularly cleared of waste within the areas.

He said they have been encountering challenges in environmental sanitation in the tourism development area and that was what compelled them to embark on the cleaning exercise. He said in addition, the GTB has employed twenty-five people to keep the TDA clean at all times.

According to Bah, some of the associations that participated in the exercise include food and juice sellers and all the beach bars and tour operators. He said they decided to involve everyone working in the industry in the exercise because it is their collective responsibility to keep the beach clean. “Where stakeholders fail to participate in such exercises, we as the regulating body will take action to make sure it is done. One of the solutions could be banning their businesses until they clean their environment.”
