Wednesday, May 13, 2009

Muhammed Baldeh, Alieu Camara and Alfusainey Jallow were appropriately punished by the law for illegally burning charcoal contrary to section 108 of the criminal code.

Following the accused persons' guilty plea to the charges, the Brikama Magistrates' court presided by Magistrate Kayode, sentenced the culprits to a fine of D1000 in default to serve one-year imprisonment.

According to the facts as stated by the prosecution the incident occurred on the 2nd April 2009, when Baboucarr Badjie, a forester, received information that some people were felling down trees and burning them into charcoal at Kassa Kunda.

He further stated that after the tip off Mr. Badjie left for the scene with two colleagues, Jereba Barrow and Lamin Drammeh. Upon their arrival at the forest they found the said persons busy on their illegal activities and were arrested and taken to Brikama Police Station where they were charged and statements obtained from them.
