Theft convict gets suspended sentence

Magistrate Kijera of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court recently convicted and sentenced one Abdou Aziz Gaye to keep the peace for a period of one year, following his own plea of guilt to a charge of stealing.

Facts as narrated by Sub-inspector Nying stated that it happened on 9 November 2015 at Westfield, between the hours of 1300 pm and 1400 pm.

The complainant was walking towards someone at the junction, and placed the bag near one of the vendors, who were sitting.

The accused came and took the said bag and was seen by one of the passersby, who called the attention of the complainant.

The complainant turned and saw the accused with the said bag walking on the road, and with the help of one Sub-inspector Omar Manka, the accused was stopped.

The accused and the complainant were later escorted to Kanifing Police Station, where the accused was cautioned and charged.

In his plea of mitigation, the accused begged for forgiveness, stating that he was a first-time offender and promised that “such a thing will never be repeated”.

The charge sheet stated that on 9 November 2015, at Westfield Junction in the Kanifing Municipality, Abdou Aziz Gaye stole one black school bag valued at D400, the property of one Ndrawe Seye.
