Pub clinched the 2019 Gunjur super cup title on Saturday, following their 2-1
victory over Solifo United, in a keenly-contested final played at the Gunjur
Upper and Senior Secondary School football field.
The Siffoe-based team slipped to Mighty Ajax 1-0 in last year’s super cup final before locking horns. The Pub dominated the opening minute of the match and created some goal scoring opportunities.
They opened the scores through striker Malang Ceesay in the 15th minute of the game from an astonishing strike.
Solifo responded quickly for an equalizer and came very close to leveling the matters through tallish man Yaya F. Touray alias Rapa in the 30th and 40th minute of the match, but his efforts were denied by The Pub’s custodian Alieu Ceesay.
Upon resumption of the match, The Pub piled pressure on Solifo United and created numerous goal chances. Their efforts yield dividend in the 60th minute when winger Omar Badjie netted the second goal from long range to dash the hopes Solifo of coming back to their feet.
Solifo made some substitutions and heavy mount pressure on The Pub’s solid defence and managed to pull one through striker Omar Bojang alias Bajaw in the 75th minute of the match, which eventually proved to be a consolation goal for them.
As champions, The Pub were decorated with a giant trophy and a cash prize of D9, 000 while Solifo United received D6, 000 as the runners-up.
