The feast of Id-Al-Adha (Tobaski)

Thursday, August 24, 2017

The feast of Id Al Adha is celebrated on the tenth day of the lunar month of Zul-Hijjah in order to commemorate the great sacrifice offered by Prophet Ibrahim and his son, Ismail, (Allah’s peace be upon them) to please Allah.

Abrahim and his family were not on the same path. He was worshipping Allah and his family worshipping idols. He had difficulty staying with them.  They even threw him fire to die but the Almighty saved him. After he escaped from the fire, he decided to go on exile and leave his people.  It is an event narrated by Allah in sura Saffat v.99 – 110: he said “I will go to my Lord! He will surely guide me! Oh my Lord, grant me a righteous (son) so we gave him the good news of a forbearing son. Then when (the son) reached (the age of) (serious) work with him, He said O my son, I have seen in a dream that I offer thee in sacrifice now see what is thy view”.  (The son) said: “O my father! Do as thou commanded. Thou will find me if Allah so wills one of the steadfast. So when they had both submitted (to Allah) and he had laid him prostrate on his fore-head (for sacrifice). We called out to him O Abrahim.” Thou hast already fulfilled the dream – thus indeed.

Do we reward those who do right for this was a clear trial and we ransomed him with a momentous sacrifice. And we left for him among generations (to come) in later times peace and salutations to Abrahim. Thus indeed do we reward those who do right, for he was one of our believing servants.”

The Prophet (SAWS) stated that one should not fast on Tobaski day because it is a day of rejoicing i.e. (eating and drinking). One must not also offer voluntary prayers. There is neither Adhan nor offer Iqama for the Id prayers. Anyone who does so should know that his action is invalid. In fact many scholars have emphasised that those who slaughter the scarified animal before the Imams of their locality have nothing to gain, except having mere meat to eat. They will lose the spiritual objective. The people should not be in a hurry to go home and slaughter their animals. After the prayers have been performed the congregation must remain and listen attentively to the Imam’s sermon.

What kind of Animals can we sacrifice

According to Imam Malick, an Islamic scholar, the following animals could be slaughtered for the feast: sheep, goats, cows and camels. The sheep should be at least eight months old or more. A goat of one or two yeas can be killed. The cow should be at least four years old, while the camel should be six years or older.

Islam is appealing to the wealthy to help the poor and the needy, so that they will have an enjoyable feast with their families. Prophet Muhammed (SAWS) prayed to Allah “to give more to the one who always helps the needy and to take from the one who refuses to help the needy, and prefer to enjoy what they have alone.” It is stated in sura Baqara v.261: “The parable of those who give away their wealth will have more on earth and thereafter.  The parable of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is that of a grain of corn. It groweth seven ears and each ear hath a hundred grains.  Allah giveth manifold increase to whom he pleaseth. And Allah careth for all and he knoweth all things”.

It is also stated in sura Baqara v.274: “Those who (in charity) spend of their goods by night and by day, in secret and in public, have their reward with their Lord; on them shall be no fear nor shall they grieve”.

Vendors should bear in mind that if one helps Allah’s affairs, one will surely have one’s affairs helped too.

It is narrated by Abu Huraira that Allah’s messenger said: “If anyone removes one of the anxieties of the world from a believer, Allah will remove one of the anxieties of the Day of Resurrection from him.  If one smooth the way for one who is destitute, Allah will smooth the way for him in this world and in the next.

And if anyone conceals the faults of a Muslim, Allah will conceal his faults in this world and in the next.  Allah helps his slaves as long as he helps his brother.

We pray for all of us to have an enjoyable feast.  May we have peace throughout the world.
