Teacher convicted for obtaining money by false pretence

Alfred Davies, a teacher who was charged with obtaining money by falsehood, was yesterday convicted and sentenced to a fine of D10,000 in default to serve twelve months in prison by Magistrate Junkung Jobarteh of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court.

He was also ordered to pay a compensation of D266,000 and $3,350 to the complainant within three months.

Prosecutors stated in their charge sheet that the convict, Alfred Davies, in 2011 in the Kanifing Municipality, by false pretence and with intent to defraud, obtained the sum of $78,000 and D264,650 from one Alhagie Jarika Kabba under the pretext of selling a diamond stone to him, knowing same to be false.

Sergeant 3560 Colley was the prosecutor.
