Tallinding
Red Cross Link in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Agency
(NDMA) have recently conducted two days capacity building training of
Tallinding residents on disaster management held at the Tallinding Bantaba.
Speaking
at the gathering, Ngange Jeng, disaster management coordinator for Kanifing
Municipality called for active participation of the participants with a view to
achieving the objectives of the training.
He
said in the Municipality, disaster is mostly caused by poor construction of
houses and problems of water flooding every year, saying Tallinding recorded
the highest percentage of disaster within the Municipality. “NDMA is aware of
the problem that Tallinding continues to encounter, particularly on disaster
related issues. We are working with our organizations in ensuring that there is
tangible solution to the Tallinding flood, among others.” He revealed.
Mr.
Jeng said addressing the problem requires education and public awareness
programmes at local community level.
“Awareness creation on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) is a process of
educating and empowering the population through sharing of knowledge and
information about the various types of disaster and their potential risks.”
He said among their objectives is to reduce
the rate of disaster in Tallinding and the surrounding communities particularly
during the raining season, saying it is of paramount significance for
stakeholders and other relevant institutions to partner NDMA in minimizing the
risk of disaster within the metropolis.
Edrisa
Manneh, branch officer of Kanifing Municipality Red Cross Link noted that there
is need to have strong surveillance team during raining season, saying both
NDMA and Red Cross among other associations at community level should team up
and participate toward disaster prevention.
