Suspected rapist appears in court

The trial involving one Modou Secka, who was alleged to have defiled a girl under the age of 18 years old commenced on Monday 23 October 2017 before Justice Simeon A. Abi of the Basse High Court.

The prosecution alleged that the accused in the month of July 2017 at Basse T. Junction in the Upper River Region unlawfully had carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 18 years old.

The accused denied the charge and lawyer Saikou Fatty of the Legal Aid Agency made application for bail, citing section 99 of the CPC and the application was not opposed by State Counsel Lamin Jarju.

The presiding Judge granted bail to the accused person on the following terms: that the accused was granted bail of D500,000 with one Gambian surety; the surety shall swear to an affidavit of means and deposit his/her National I D Card with the Registrar of the Court; the accused shall deposit his International Passport or any travel documents he possesses with the registrar of the court pending the determination of the case and both the surety and the accused person shall each deposit one passport size photo with the Registrar of the Court.
