A stray bullet from The Gambia Armed Forces firing exercise ground at Lance Corporal Bojang Range in Brikama was said to have hit and killed one Fatou Manneh, a woman in her 40s.

The incident happened last Thursday but she died Saturday at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (RVTH) in Banjul, sources say.

It happened during a military exercise at the firing range and she was rushed to the hospital but could not survive, The Point has been informed.

Sources say Fatou went to the bush near the range to collect some fuel wood Thursday morning when the stray bullet from the military firing exercise hit her at around 10: 36 a.m.

The military spokesperson Major Lamin K. Sanyang confirmed the tragic incident, saying it occurred on Thursday when GAF was conducting some training exercise.

“When the team was ready and heading to Fajara, we received a call that a woman suffered from a gunshot and was rushed to the Brikama Health Center and later referred to Edward Francis Teaching Hospital. A team was dispatched to go and find out about the incident,” he said.

“We have opened an investigation to ascertain how she died and we are also working with her family for as both commander of the GAF Training School and the head of the Military Police visited the family on Saturday,” Major Sanyang told The Point.

The GAF spokesperson added that there was public announcement made on The Gambia Radio and Television Services and the Brikama FMB Radio with regard to the training of the GAF personnel at the Lance Corporal Bojang Firing Range.
