State of Qatar ready to support New Gambia, says ambassador

The ambassador of the State of Qatar to The Gambia, Faisal Fahad al-Mana, has said that the State of Qatar is ready to support New Gambia, adding that the two countries and their leaders look forward to further strengthening trade, economic and cultural relations. 

Ambassador al-Mana made these remarks on Tuesday 18 December 2018 at Coco Ocean Resort during the celebration of Qatar National Day.

The occasion was graced by the vice president of the Republic of The Gambia, minister of Justice, Senegalese ambassador to The Gambia, foreign diplomats, Cabinet members, National Assembly Members, managing directors, Imam Ratib of Banjul and chief of Defense Staff among other high profile dignitaries.

He highlighted the important bilateral relations between the State of Qatar and the Republic of The Gambia, saying a few months ago the State of Qatar donated $3 million to The Gambia government to support the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparation Commission as well as the democratization process of The Gambia.

He further said that the two countries have signed bilateral agreement including avoidance of double taxation, prevention of financial evacuation in respect of income tax, air service agreement as well as the agreement regulating the employment of Gambian workers in the State of Qatar.

He remarked that the Qatar National Day celebration gives them the opportunity to acknowledge the efforts of the grandfathers and grandparents of Qatar who made efforts to gain unity of the country.

He stated that Qatar’s foreign policy principle is based on peace, security, stability, cooperation and friendship and on these bases the State of Qatar consistently affirms the peaceful resolutions of conflict and dispute on the bases of dialogue within various partners and non-interference in internal affairs of states.

The vice president of the Republic of The Gambia, Ousainou Darboe, said Gambia and Qatar share a lot in common, adding that both are small states who believe in fostering global peace and that conflict should be resolved amicably.

According to him, The Gambia will never shy away from its responsibility of ensuring that global peace prevails.

“We do not believe in interference of internal affairs of other countries”, VP Darboe went on, saying: “We are a friend to the whole world.”

Mr. Darboe said The Gambia appreciates its fruitful relationship with Qatar and also expressed appreciation to the State of Qatar for opening Gambia’s Embassy in Qatar.

“We are appreciative of the handsome donation of three million U.S. dollars by the State of Qatar”, he also said while thanking the State of Qatar through President Barrow for standing by The Gambia at the time of our need.

“We value our friendship and appreciate your contribution towards the development of The Gambia”, he concluded.
