Sports Journalists’ Association of The Gambia (SJAG) will be decorating and
celebrating outstanding sports men and women for the year of 2017.
The annual national sports award was conceived by the professional body nine years ago and has over the years awarded a number of past and present athletes who helped raise The Gambia flag high.
SJAG is the legally registered body responsible for the welfare of sports journalists in the country. It is headed by Gambian sports Journalist, Musa Sise. The awards have over the years attracted hundreds of attendance from within and outside the country.
The body also organises trainings for its members and helped in the payment of tuition fees for some of its members to pursue journalism courses. It still faces some challenges, including the low commitment of some members.
Secretary General Alieu Ceesay believes sports journalists are critical partners to sports development. “However, we are challenged by many people reporting on Gambian sports without knowing the basics of the profession. We are working on transforming the profession.”
