SJAG awards Sportsmen and Women with difference

Sports Journalists Association of the Gambia (SJAG), Saturday held their 10th edition of Awards Night held at the Coco Ocean Hotel in Bijilo.

The night was meant to award and celebrate the best Gambian athletes, individuals and groups who over the last 12 months have entertained and caught the attention of Gambian Sports Journalists. It is also meant to inspire and celebrate fellow countrymen and women for their efforts in all sports.

Senegalese Sports Minister Mattar Ba expressed delights to be part of this year’s SJAG award night, noting that it is an important event as it helps to encourage sports men and women in the country.

He said, aside from helping people to be healthy, sports brings people together and also develops a country. He said sports cannot be developed by people doing it alone but it needs the support of both government and journalists. “Government alone cannot develop sports in a country but needs the support of journalists like how SJAG and ANPS are doing.”

Minister Ba called on both members of SJAG and ANPS to support their presidents in achieving their objectives in sports.

Pape Saine, Honorary Life President of SJAG said the award is meant to encourage sports men and women in the country, adding that SJAG is proud to celebrate such event with their Senegalese counterparts, ANPS.

Abdoulie Thiam, ANPS President said he is highly honoured to be part of the SJAG 10th Award ceremony and thanked SJAG president Musa Sise for been the pioneer of both associations’ partnership.  “Just recently, we were in Ghana for a meeting and all what they talk about is our partnership (SJAG and ANPS). I am praying for this partnership to grow bigger and better as some associations are trying to emulate us.”

Musa Sise, SJAG President said sports have the potential to change peoples’ lives, saying aside from the gathering, it remains an inspiration to them and celebration of their fellow countrymen and women in recognition of their efforts in all sports.

Mr. Sise said the SJAG and ANPS partnership have developed a rare relations amongst the entire African sports press membership and has become a reference point in the global sports fraternity

The President of Gambia Football Federation (GFF), Lamin Kaba Bajo was awarded Sports Personality of the Year 2018; Omar Colley of Sampdoria, Italy won the Foreign Based Athlete of the Year; Hoyontan a wrester from Club Ndongo Ceesay won the Local Based Athlete of the Year; Best Male Team of the Year goes to National U-20 WAFU Team; Red Scorpion bagged the Best Female Team of the Year Award; Mariama Sallah, a National Athlete coach won Best Female Coach of the Year; Gamtel FC Coach, Sulayman Kuyateh awarded Male Coach of the Year; Adama Tamba awarded Best Female Athlete award and Bottrop Senior Secondary School were awarded the Outstanding Senior School in Sports.
