The Single Parents Foundation (SPF) was
officially launched on the evening of 5 September 2017 at the Jama Hall of the
Kairaba Beach Hotel.
The foundation is the development initiative of Absolute Entertainment and partners to complement government’s efforts in social protection, with a special focus on single parents.
The launching was laced with a performance by multiple award winning singer Joss Stone, as part of her “TOTAL WORLD TOUR”.
The gala event also featured outstanding performances from Gambian superstar artistes; Barhama and veteran musician Coly Cisse.
The Single Parents Foundation is an organization setup to provide support and strategic intervention to single parents and their children.
It aims to provide quality guidance and counseling services for both parents and their children, identify role models and influential members of society and actively engage them in assisting, mentoring, supporting, grooming and empowering single parents and their children.
The Single Parents Foundation further aims to assist single parents in areas where support is most critical and urgently needed.
SPF will actively take part in creating avenues for starting and continuing education, pursuing career paths, small businesses, grooming and inculcating social responsibility and moral values, improving the quality of life, promoting positive and healthy self-image, love for country and the spirit of brotherliness and care.
The SPF was officially launched by the Minister for Trade and Employment Hon. Dr. Isatou Touray, representing the Minister of Women Affairs and overseer of the Office of the Vice President whose speech highlighted the plight of Single parents in The Gambia and the society’s responsibility towards Single Parents.
The foundation intends to champion a culture of positive and healthy parenting with the belief that single parents must first accept their role and parenting must be their number one priority.
She stressed that Healthy self-care, development and maintenance of traditions and rituals for the family, financial self-sufficiency and independence, a positive attitude, and management of family time and activities are also very important.
SPF will endeavour to connect single parents and initiative a robust support network that will be healthy and encouraging toward positive change.
It was their desire to help single parents develop and/or nurture the qualities of single parenting.
The event was graced by dignitaries including U.K Ambassador to The Gambia, Sharon Wardle and the Deputy head of Mission, Banjul, Gregor O’Gorman, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of The Republic of The Gambia, Mr. Ebrima Ousman Ndure, Director of Social Welfare, Fanta Bai Secka, C.E.O of Gambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Alieu Secka, and UNFPA chief of Operations, Mr. Kunle Adeniyi, as well as staff of the Ministry of Agriculture, Gamtel, Guaranty Trust Bank, Seaview Garden Hotels, Euro African Group and Afriqcars.
Absolute Entertainment and The Single Parents Foundation expressed gratitude and appreciation to everyone for their support, their main sponsors, their hosts, special guests, superstar Barhama Cham, the entire Absolute Entertainment and SPF Teams, Zikodev Multimedia, Grapevine Executive, Children and Community Initiative for Development (CAID), British Embassy, Gambia and all single parents who graced the occasion.
