Senegalese community in The Gambia and some Gambian dignitaries on Wednesday
evening gathered at Senegalese High Commission in Brusubi to celebrate the 58th
independence anniversary of the sister republic of Senegal.
During the celebration, the Senegalese ambassador, His Excellency Professor Saliou Ndiaye explained that one cannot reiterate enough of the special and unique bond that exists between Senegal and The Gambia regardless of boarders and a boundary, saying it is near impossible to eliminate one from the other as the commonalities are one and the same. “We are further cultivating the seeds sown by our leaders, His Excellency President Macky Sall and President Adama Barrow, who have worked tirelessly to shape our future relations especially during a difficult period that seized The Gambia”.
“Our heads of state have made a commitment to meet by annually to discuss all avenues of cooperation. Thus over the course of the past two years, we have seen an increase strengthening the political ties between the two countries, encouraging positive intergovernmental relations and ensuring continued stability in sub region,” he stated.
Ndiaye highlighted that several bilateral agreements have been signed fostering a mutually beneficial economic growth, saying some are currently being implemented. “Soon we shall witness a greater ease of movement upon the completion of these agreements. We must reflect on the best way to nurture and further strengthen our already existing bond through dialogue and comprehensive philosophical underpinnings that form and shape our interactions as nations and peoples. I have no doubt that our government and people share this resolve and commitment which has been infused in our relations and with the government and the people of The Gambia,” he stressed.
The minister of Information and Communication Infrastructure, Demba Ali Jawo, delivered a message on behalf of the minister of Foreign Affairs, International and Gambians Abroad Ousainou Darboe, saying under the two great leadership of His Excellency President Macky Sall and President Adama Barrow, will continue to register stronger friendship to promote peaceful co-existence, progress and stability that’s necessary to help us achieve growth and social-economic development and happiness to our peoples.
“Senegal has played a pivotal role as expected in bringing peace in The Gambia especially during the difficult post-election period that seized The Gambia. We will continue to reiterate this significant role that our brother has played in this important direction. We continue to appreciate the commitment of our heads of state to advance our bilateral ties and cooperation as seen in the recent concluded meeting of the Presidential Council that was held in Banjul and in which the two presidents reiterated their stance to promote dialogue and consultation in addressing matters of concern especially as they relate to free and easy movement of goods and peoples,” he stated.
