Senegal Justice minister says ‘Karim Wade is eligible’ to contest for presidency

Mar 25, 2015, 11:09 AM

Despite his heavy penalty of 6 years in prison, Karim Wade is still eligible to contest for the position of president in Senegal, according to the country’s Justice Minister Sidiki Kaba.

This statement was made on Monday at the trial of Karim Wade, charged with the offence of illicit enrichment and sentenced to 6 years in prison.

However, Karim Wade did not lose his constitutional rights to vote and to be voted for.

“The prohibition of the exercise of his (Karim Wade) civic, civil and family rights laid down by article 34 of the code of criminal procedure, is not part of the sanctions handed down by the Court,” said Justice Minister Kaba, adding that the candidate of the PDS party maintains his right to vote and is still eligible to be voted for, provided he would be released before the next election in 2017.
