coastal community of Sanyang, in Kombo South District is preparing for a
massive beach cleansing exercise on October 19, at the community’s beach site.
According to the community’s youth environmental committee who are organising the exercise, the event is designed to clean the entire beach as preparations towards the tourism season. They said it is also part of celebrations marking world cleanup day for the improvement of the environment and safety of the marine life.
Secretary of the youth environment committee, Pa Ousman Sanyang said the exercise is part of their mandate as a youth committee, saying it will have the potential to create friendlier and healthy environment for not only tourists, but also natives of the community who, he said, gain their daily livelihood from the beach.
“We are doing this mainly for the cleanliness of our beach site and to save our marine life. This is because there are lots of plastic bags found on our beaches everyday with the potential of finding themselves in the oceans which can be harmful to the sea foods and other living organisms,” he said.
Abdou Fofana, a member of the youth environment committee said the cleansing exercise should not include the participation of only the committee members but the entire community in making sure that there is a complete save environment for human beings and animals to stay.
