ChildFund The Gambia affiliated federation -Saama Kairo- last Thursday
distributed 15 bicycles to its female sponsored children from seven communities
within the Federation’s operation areas in Kombo Central and East Districts.
The distribution is part of 250 bicycles donated by Childfund to its affiliated federations for onward delivery to needy sponsored female students.
Programmes coordinator Sunkary Jatta said the Federation attaches huge importance to education, saying the support is meant to facilitate beneficiary students’ punctuality and timely arrival to school.
Board chairman Tijan Jarju expressed gratitude for the Federation’s support to the children, who he described as future leaders of the country. He said the gift will go a long way in addressing the beneficiaries’ late arrival to school, while urging parents to allow their girl child to complete their education.
Human resource and Administrative coordinator Kebba Saidykhan said the bicycles are meant for sponsored children in Omorto, Nigie, Kafuta Tunbung, Amdalai, Tumani Tenda, and Faraba Sutu under Shom Community Association.
He said the gesture targets to facilitate the movement of students from home to school, particularly the Deprived, Excluded and Vulnerable (DEV) children. “These bicycles are meant for school children and not for parents to use for their domestic needs.”
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiary families, Modou Lamin Badjie of Kafuta Tunbung thanked the Federation for complementing their efforts, saying the bicycles will go a long way in helping their children who trek for long distances to school.
Sofie Sanyang a beneficiary student said the support will help improve their educational performance and promised that the bicycles will be used for their intended purpose.
