Gambia’s dancehall artiste Royal Messenjah is currently busy in the studios ahead of the official release of his new album later this year. The album titled Wareef will feature Grammy award winner Joss Stone and others.
Royal Messenjah grew up in a musical family, as both his parents are griots. He burst into the music scene with hits including Yaye Boye, Griot, I cry, Misery and pain and Sohore as his latest tracks. Choosing the conscious streak, his music promotes positivity, oneness and consciousness.
It was in 2014 when he released 3 mix tape one of which was launched in Senegal. Then came his debut album in 2017 titled The Griot, which enjoys favourable airplays on the country’s FM bands.
“Currently I’m in Dakar for a festival and some live album recording for my upcoming album. I did some of the songs in this album with Joss Stone. Currently, the video has 1 million views If on YouTube in for months,” he added.
He said he has taken The Gambian flag to the four corners of the world for been recognized with solid positive reggae music which gives him the access to share one stage with the Grammy award winner Bennie Man. “I’m the king of reggae dancehall in The Gambia and I have nothing to prove that.”
