The
European Union funded Youth Empowerment Project (YEP) in collaboration with The
Gambia Tourism Board (GTB) and The Gambia Maritime Administration recently held
a five-day training for staff of tour companies and riverboat operators.
The
training, mainly sponsored by the European Union was geared towards developing
participants’ capacity and safety in execution of their services and to ensure
quality in the hospitality industry.
“This
training is another milestone in the annals of tourism in The Gambia and could
not have happened at a better time than now in our government’s quest to ensure
that Gambians, particularly youth take integral part in the development of all
sectors of the country,” GTB director general representative Mr. Tambara said.
He
noted that the direct beneficiary of the training is by and large the tourism
industry and given the gigantic strides being undertaken by the Ministry of
Tourism and Culture.
“Equally,
we urge and expect all the recipients to share the knowledge and skills
received with others who were not privileged to attend this rare but important
training.”
Representative
of the Director General of The Gambia Maritime Administration, Mr. Touray,
expressed optimism that after the training, the services that Tourists receive
or experience would improve greatly in terms of quality.
At the end of the training, the 12
participants were awarded certificates.
