PRESS RELEASE: Price increment in bread

Monday, April 15, 2019

It has come to the attention of the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment that the Senfour Modern Bakeries Association and its membership had a meeting on Tuesday 9 th April 2019 and increased the price of bread from D7 to D8 per bread. The Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment wishes to inform all the members of the Association that coming together to fix a price of a product in the Gambia is illegal as it violates Section 25 Sub-section (2) (b) of the Gambia Competition Act 2007. This price increment is therefore illegal and unacceptable and should be reversed back to its D7. The Ministry has instructed the Gambia Competition and Consumer Protection Commission to take the necessary action to curb this anti-competition behavior of the Association. Given that this action of the Association is in bridge of the laws of the land, the Association is hereby advised to conform to the law. The Ministry also wishes to inform the general public that the Gambia Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has reported that bikers (middlemen) involved in the distribution of bread are operating as a cartel and are influential in the pricing of bread. In this regard, the Ministry has noted the work of the Food Safety and Quality Authority in improving the baking and handling of bread through the value chain and will work closely with the Gambia Competition and Consumer Protection Commission to address the anti-competition behavior of operators in bread industry. The Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment is totally against the price increment as there is no basis or justification for the increment and is strictly advising all operators to comply with this press release.
