Police nab 3 suspected of fuel theft at NAWEC

Personnel of the Criminal Intelligent Division (CID) in The Gambia Police Force have Monday nabbed three men suspected of stealing five (5) drums of 20 litres of gasoil from the struggling National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC), at Kotu Power Station.

Suspects Essa Mbenga (Principal Suspect - Permanent Staff NAWEC), Lamin Samateh (GTTI Student on internship at NAWEC), Yunusa Sowe (Taxi Driver) were found loading the said fuel into a taxi with registration number BJL 9612 M, police spokesperson, David Kujabi confirmed.

The trio were in police custody helping the CID with investigations.

Kujabi said that the raid came prior to a tip-off by a concerned citizen on a suspected theft of fuel at NAWEC (Kotu Power Station), resulting to The Gambia Police CID in Kanifing mounting surveillance in the area. “During the early hours of Monday 13 November, the professionalism and patience of the officers finally paid off,” Spokesperson Kujabi said.

Base on prima facie evidence at hand, the accused persons have been charged with Stealing, Contrary to Section 252 of Criminal Code, Cap 10:01 Vol. III Laws of The Gambia 2009.
