Superintendent Omar Bojang, Officer Commanding of The Gambia Police Force human
resources unit has blamed majority of accidents during the rainy season to
slippery roads, which he said was why road accidents are frequent during this
time of the year.
Bojang said traffic officers have been trained since they are the first to
respond to accident scenes.
Jersey, officer in charge of Kairaba Police Station said drivers should always
concentrate when they are driving which can also help in accident prevention.
He said Section 51 of the traffic Act dictates that people must fasten their
seat belts during driving, which, he said is for personal safety.
you drive a vehicle without fastening your seat belt, if anything happen it can
lead to death or serious injuries. We have seen instances where vehicles would
somersault and result to deaths and serious injuries, especially for those who
do not fasten their seat belts during the accident.”
said most of the accidents in The Gambia are caused by over speeding, adding
that if drivers can avoid that, accidents would reduce. “As long as drivers
continue to over speed, it would be very difficult to reduce road accident and
that is why we are always on the highway to educate and have radio talk shows
to share ideas and sensitize people on how they should go on the highway.”
