Mummy &Tommy, a non-profit organisation recently commissioned a new Nursery
School at Lamin. The organisation’s authorities say the construction of the
School was borne out of their drive to participate in bringing education to the
doorstep of every Gambian.
Established by a young Gambian philanthropist Sarah Nelson some few years ago in the United States, the organisation dedicates itself to helping mothers and children in need.
The school, called “Sarah’s Kindergarten” has already started enrolling children for free, many of whom are from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds as a way of motivating parents to send their children to school.
Sarah Nelson said at the event that the ultimate target of her initiative is to help underprivileged women and children, particularly the girl child. “The school’s enrollment mainly targets girls because we believe they are always left behind when it comes to issues like education. Personally, when I was in high school, I have seen how girls struggle to go to school. So since then that passion of helping young girls became part of me,” she added.
She said they are aware that there is need to reach out to other parts of the country to support them, saying it is in their plans to reach as far as possible.
