administrative secretary of the People’s Democratic Organisation for
Independence and Socialism (PDOIS), Edrisa Jallow, has dismissed claims that 81
members of his party have cross-carpeted to the Gambia Democratic Congress
(GDC), describing it as false.
“PDOIS as a political party does not work like that,” Mr. Jallow said, explaining that his party has a procedural way of doing things.
The GDC in its recent rally in Brikama claimed that 81 militants from PDOIS have shifted allegiance to GDC, a claim PDOIS denied.
According to Mr. Jallow, members of PDOIS are registered as members and based on that, any militant who wish to resign goes through a normal procedure of tendering their resignation letters.
“As a party, we do not have the right to deny any member wishing to change allegiance to another political party. But the party has a culture of how people cross-carpet to other parties,” he stated.
He explained that anyone who resigns from PDOIS is given a letter acknowledging his/her request.
He added that his party is a responsible party and they do not just come and parade party militants in a rally, announcing their cross-carpeting to another political party.
“We should graduate from this stage and know that it is not right to just parade some people in front of a party leader and start announcing their wish of cross-carpeting to another party without verifying the authenticity of their change in allegiance.”
