Organisation for Social Development and Inclusion for Persons with Disability (OSDIVI) on Sunday organised a day-long gathering, where they discussed and highlight challenges of disability in celebration of World Disability Day which is celebrated every 3 December.

The gathering avails the participants to highlight the challenges they are facing in the society and to find ways to mitigate those obstacles. About a dozen participants took part in the workshop held at OSDIVI office in Kanifing.

Public relation officer Landing Bojang said an enabling environment should be created for persons with disability for them to realise their potentials, saying society is not fully seeing their capacity, competence and potential which he said, is rather unfortunate.

Mr. Bojang urged advocates of persons with disability to engage in research and education which will help them in their crusade, quoting former South African president Nelson Mandela as saying that “Education is the most powerful weapon one can use to change the world.”

Yahya Muhammed Bah, Country representative Global Alliance on Accessible Technologies and Environment (GAATES) said, what persons with disability have are limitations but not disability as society views them saying that, everyone has limitations depending on a particular situation.

“What is expected of the society is to complement our shortcomings,” said Mr. Bah who is also the country representative of Global Alliance on Accessible Technologies and Environments (GAATES) .

He further said that, when one is excluded  he or she feels rejected, saying that persons with disability have been excluded in the society for decades.

Yankuba Faal Sonko, chief executive officer of OSDIVI said, the organisation was created in 2011 to empower disability persons with skills such as IT training. “We don’t want to see persons with disability going around town begging. We want them to acquire skills to help themselves.”

Lamin K Fatty, one of the participants implored on all members to come together in order for them to accomplish their desired aims and objective.

The organisation comprises of persons with disability which also  offers training on Information Technology, social entrepreneurship and music. It creates employment opportunities for members upon completion of their training by identifying and recommending places for them to work.
