Newspaper Publishers Association of The Gambia will be launched Thursday. The
Association will be the umbrella body for Newspaper Publishers in The Gambia.
The association just like any media association will promote and protect by all
lawful means the interests of the newspaper publishing industry in The Gambia.
It will also seek to protect its members by dealing collectively with problems
that can best be so dealt with. The association comes in the wake of growing
demand by Newspaper Publishers in the country for the need to come together and
speak in one voice in meeting their objectives. As the Gambia ushered in
democratic dispensation, we believe that this association will lay a solid and
viable environment for Newspaper Publishers in the country.
What is more exciting is that the association will also seek to provide a forum for the exchange of vital information and ever-changing dynamics confronting Newspaper Publishers in the country. Thus, the association comes at a time when activists and stakeholders have intensified their call for repeal of draconian laws in our constitution.
This kind of professional association is not a new phenomenon, as many developed countries around the world have established association of such. Thus, it is high time The Gambia also established an association as such that will work closely with a variety of industry partners and to advance the work of newspaper workers in the country.
Democracy depends on a free press and the cornerstone of any democracy is the unique privilege and responsibility of every citizen to be engaged meaningfully. And for a society to be responsible and powerful, it must be informed. Without a free press that can defend its sources, democracy will certainly crumble. Therefore, the coming of this Newspaper Publishers Association of The Gambia is not only timely but will go a long way in protecting the rights of Newspapers in the country.
