The Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC) on Saturday joined the rest of the world to commemorate World Olympic Day at the Serrekunda East Mini Stadium.
The daylong event brought together various schools across the country who competed in various activities ranging from raoad race, tug of war, wrestling, table tennis, among others.
Speaking at the occasion, Dodou ‘Kapi’ Joof, president of The Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC) said the commemoration continues to create greater awareness of the Olympic Movement and the ideal of Olympianism in The Gambia and the world at large.
Mr. Joof added that Olympic day is more than just a sporting event but a day of active learning. He described the day as an excellent way to encourage all people regardless of age, gender and ability to live a healthy and active life.
Beatrice Allen, OIC Member who read a statement on behalf of OIC president said each year, the day brings together people to celebrate the joy of sport, saying this year marks the 125th anniversary of the creation of the International Olympic Committee. “Olympic day continues to be an important reminder of how sport can unite us all and make the world a better place in so many ways,” she stated.
