NYC to host Youth Connekt Gambia Summit

National Youth Council (NYC) will be hosting the first Youth Connekt Gambia Summit from January 16 –17, 2019, which intend to bring young people, policy makers, policy influencers, young innovators, entrepreneurs and development partners to interface and network.

The initiative is meant to accelerate actions that creates decent jobs for youths, support youth entrepreneurship, innovation, leadership and bridge the gender gap.

According to the organizers, targets of the convergence will be achieved through policy and programme harmonizing, strengthen coordination and partnership for the present and future generations.

Funded by UNDP-The Gambia through the Entrepreneurship and Private Sector Development Project under the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment (MOTIE), the gathering targets 200 young people and other partners across the country.

Youth Connekt Gambia cascades the Youth Connekt African goals into local context in line with the strategic priorities of the National Development Plan 2018 – 2021 by supporting education, entrepreneurship and employment for youths to harness the demographic potential and talents of youths for socio-economic transformation.

The ambitious goals of Youth Connekt Gambia includes creation of 100, 000 jobs by 2021 in a peaceful environment, especially in emerging industries especially in ICT, tourism, creative industry and agricultural value chain among others. This will be aligned to the NDP goal of reducing youth unemployment from 38% to 25%.

It also targets to create 250, 000 education and skills training opportunities, job placements, access to finance and productive resources for youths and identify nurture, and grow 10, 000 ethical leaders that provide solutions, participate in advocacy and become role models in their communities.

The Youth Connekt project equally targets to empower Ministry of Youth and Sports and strengthen National Youth Council to coordinate result-based multi- sectoral youth engagement to realise the goals.

Since the official launch of the project in October 2018, National Youth Council has conducted a nationwide sensitization and consultation which were aimed at informing relevant stakeholders about Youth Connekt, how the initiative started and what it intends to achieve in The Gambia.
