Niumi Lamin lifts Toubakolong ‘nawetan’ trophy

Niumi Lamin United were on Saturday 6th January 2018 crowned champions of the 2017 Toubakolong Youth and Sport Development Association nawetan following their 1-nil win over Aljamdu United in their replay final.

Kebba Sidibeh was the hero of the day, scoring the only goal of the game for Niumi Lamin United the 17th minute from a close range finish.

As winners, Niumi Lamin United received a giant trophy, gold medals and a cash prize of D10, 000 while runners up Aljamdu United received silver medals and a consolation prize of D8, 000.

Referees of the day were also decorated with medals. Sika United was voted the most disciplined team of the tournament and thus received D1, 000 while Abdoulie Jallow of Aljamdu United was named the leading goal scorer of the tournament. He therefore received D500.

The game played at Toubakolong football field was graced by the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Finance Lamin Camara, National Assembly Member for Upper Niumi Constituency Omar S. Darboe, North Bank Region Football Association President Abou Khan, Essau Youth and Sport Committee Chairman Yankuba Marong, North Bank Region Regional coach Bubacarr ‘Boris’ Demba, thousands of football fans among other high dignitaries.

Finance PS Lamin Camara` took the kickoff of the game. The first final ended in an 8-8 penalty shootout draw following a 2-all draw on regulation time. The tournament was sponsored by Njundu Sonko.

Speaking to reporters shortly after the game, Wally S. B. Baldeh head coach Aljamdu United said they detected their mistakes from the first game and worked on them but were meant to lose the final and as such have taken the defeat in good faith.

He commended his players for a job well done despite losing the game, claiming that the goal they conceded was an off side.

He noted that they will now shift their attention to the late Famara Gomez memorial trophy, saying he is hopeful they will qualify for the final because he has the team.

Bakary M. Sonko head coach Niumi Lamin United expressed delight with lifting the trophy as well as the discipline that was shown by players and fans from both ends.

He urged his players to take up the game seriously, saying sports is business. He also called on the Ministry of Youth and Sports to support grass roots football, saying, that is what will give them courage to achieve their goals.

He also called on national team coaches to expand their scouting method as there are talents across the country and not just with Greater Banjul Area for the development of Gambian football.

He explained that scouting rural players to our various national teams will discourage irregular migration and urbanization.

Hon. Omar S. Darboe National Assembly Member for Upper Niumi Constituency said their target is to have three fenced football grounds within the constituency during their 5-year tenure.

He commended the two sides and their fans for the respect and discipline shown during the game. He also commended the committee for staging a successful tournament.

Kemo Ceesay, Chairman Toubakolong Youth and Sport Development Association said he was pleased the committee successfully staged the tournament because organising a tournament goes with a lot of challenges. He thanked everybody that has supported the committee in one way or the other in ensuring the tournament becomes a success particularly the sponsor, the national assembly member for the constituency, Chief of the district, Governor, Essau youth and sport committee, community elders, team representatives, regional football committee officials, technical committee members and the media.
