Wednesday, January 14, 2009

A Nigerian national was on Monday 12 January 2009 arraigned for allegedly attempting to kidnap one Yankuba Sawaneh.

Chindrim David Awu, a resident of Old Yundum, according to the particulars of the alleged offence, on or about the 5th of December 2008 at Limba Guest House in Bakau attempted to kidnap the said Yankuba Sawaneh.

He has however denied the charge.

Meanwhile he is being granted bail in the sum of D5, 000.00 (Five Thousand Dalasis) with one Gambian surety.

The case was adjourned to the 22nd January 2009.

Readers would recall that the police, for reportedly arrested the accused, Chindirim David Awu, for allegedly attempting to commit a felony.

As narrated by Superintendent Malamin Ceesay, Officer Commanding Major Crime Unit of the Gambia Police Force, shortly after the arrest of Chindirim his office received a tip-off that a certain Nigerian national has been given a photograph of a Gambian who was living in the United States, and was presently in The Gambia to fetch him.

According to Officer Ceesay, Chindirim David Awu when arrested had informed him that the said photo was given to him by a Gambian who promised to pay him $ 2000 if he could fetch the person in the photo.

He added that Mr. Chindirim David Awu went to fetch the said person somewhere in a hotel in Bakau.

He revealed that the Gambian complainant who informed the police had said that while in the United States, some Gambians came to his house and beat him very seriously and he suspected it was the same culprits who are after him.

According to OC Ceesay, the person who brought the photograph from the United States was then at large.
