The programme officer, environmental quality at the National Environment Agency (NEA), Mariatou Dumbuya, has stated that the laws that ban the importation of plastic bags are still in place adding that anyone who carries such banned materials into the country is doing it illegally.

She made this statement in an interview with The Point during a daylong massive environment cleaning exercise by Sanyang Youth Tesito Association over the weekend at Sanyang Kombo South District.

She made it clear that the laws that ban importation of plastic bags into the country still remains effective for the protection of both the fauna and flora. Therefore anyone who is found wanting of transporting plastic bags into the country will face the full force of the law.

She said that banning of plastics is the responsibility of NEA but the law should be enforced by partners such as the police. She added that they have trained and sensitised different partner institutions such as The Gambia Police Force and Customs aimed at complementing the efforts of the NEA in plastic ban enforcement.

“It does not mean that when a law or a policy is being developed you as the custodian to that law is only responsible for the enforcement of it, she stated. “The Gambia Police and other security agents are supposed to complement our efforts.”
