National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) recently distributed food and
non-food items to 63 households, representing a total number of 364 people in
the Kanifing Municipality who were affected by fire, windstorm and flood
disasters in 2017.
The items included 150 bags of rice, gallons of cooking oil, buckets and hygiene materials. The donation was provided by the United Arab Emirates through Gambia Islamic Union in collaboration with the NDMA.
Speaking at the distribution center, Kanifing municipality disaster management coordinator Ngange Jeng said the donation came at the right time, saying it will go a long way in relieving the affected families.
“The beneficiaries will appreciate the gesture as it will help in solving some of their pressing issues,” he said, while urging the beneficiaries to make best use of the donated materials.
Mr. Jeng appealed to philanthropists institutions and individuals to come to disaster victims’ aid, saying some are still in difficult circumstances. He said the number of fire incidence is in the increase in the municipality compared to previous years. “This year we plan to ensure that disaster is mitigated in the country.”
