Speaker of the National Assembly, Mariam Jack-Denton, has announced that
parliament would ensure that democracy, transparency and accountability dictate
the order of the day under her leadership.
She added that they (lawmakers) expect a high premium to be placed on transparency and accountability in public service delivery.
She made these remarks at Tendaba Camp, Lower River Region, during the opening of the 6-day Pre-Session retreat of the National Assembly on Monday.
She said after 22 years of undemocratic governance, the training would enable the honorable members to effectively play their national duties in the new found democratic dispensation.
According to her, umpteenth reforms are anticipated most particularly in the area of legal sector, hence series of capacity building interventions have been conducted since the advent of the 5th legislature this year.
“We are all aware that most members of this 5th legislature including myself are new. This comes with capacity challenges that if left unaddressed will greatly hamper our performance,” the speaker declared.
The speaker hopes that the lapses in the areas of institutional governance will be improved as well as the role that oversight committees of the National Assembly would help in promoting good governance principles.
