Coordinating Organization for Farmers Association The Gambia (NACOFAG); a
network of farmers and community forest organizations, in collaboration with
the Ministry of Agriculture will host the 8th edition of Network of Peasants
and Producers Association of West Africa (ROPPA) convention from 1-4 December
and the African Union Commission on the 28-30 November at the Paradise Suite
The regional convention is expected to bring about 250 national and international delegates from 15 West African countries, other part of Africa and major partners of ROPPA such as IFAD, ECOWAS, CORAF/WECARD, ADB, AU, AFD, FAO among others to talk about family farming, seed, youth migration and agricultural funding.
During a media briefing at the NACOFAG office in Brikama on Thursday, the Association’s president Musa Sowe said, this is the first time Gambia will be hosting the convention, noting that the event is conducted every four years.
Mr. Sowe said, the forum is designed to feature five side events of different themes, including seed issue, rural land markets in West Africa, youth migration and agricultural funding, territorial food and nutrition system.
According to him, 70% of agricultural production comes from family farms which encounter many difficulties in accessing quality seed imputes.
Coordinator Alieu Sowe also spoke at length on the significance of the forum, noting that they are expecting President Barrow to preside the official opening of the event.
