MRCG inaugurates D9.5M unit facility in Brikama

 Medical Research Council The Gambia in partnership with Gambia government yesterday inaugurated a 9.5 million dalasi unit facility at the Brikama District Hospital.  The construction of the unit was funded by PATH.

The inauguration, celebrated at the Brikama District Hospital was geared toward building a stronger partnership.

In his official inauguration statement on behalf of the health minister, Director of health services Mamadi Cham commended MRCG for their efforts in boosting Gambia’s health sector. He also praised them for their partnership with government while appealing for the proper utilisation of the facility.

Professor Umberto D’Alessandro, MRC Gambia Unit Director said MRCG and Gambia government have a long standing relationship, saying whatever they are doing in the country that relates to health, they do it in partnership with the ministry of health.

Professor D’Alessandro emphasised the importance of research to MRC, maintaining that they we cannot provide good and reliable services without conducting research. “We conduct research because we are living in a global world which is rapidly changing. With the current mass migration, there is going to be new diseases which need to be tackled and that can only be done through research,” he said. 

Bakary Sanyang, Governor of West Coast Region said MRCG has been supportive to Gambia’s health sector, saying bringing the project to Brikama is in line with government’s centralisation programme.
