of The Gambia Wrestling Federation, Modou Faye (Cham) has disclosed to this
medium that the Ministry of Sports has supported the upcoming national
wrestling championship with D460, 000.
Cham as he is commonly called said the support will greatly help in the successful staging of the championship. The annual championship brings wrestlers from across the regions to compete in 65kg, 76kg, 86kg, 100kg and 120kgs. The championship is scheduled for 23-24th June at the Serrekunda East Mini Stadium.
After years of dormancy, efforts are underway to revive the traditional sport that is currently the most followed and watched local sporting competition.
Cham said his executive is working on many projects, including the wrestling arena at the Buffer Zone in Tallinding.
Wrestling stakeholders have over the years been complaining about less consideration from the ministry in terms of funding. Cham therefore applauded the ministry for the timely intervention and called on public and private companies and institutions to support the event.
