The new mayor of Kanifing Municipality Council (KMC), Talib Ahmed Bensouda, has vowed that he will change the Kanifing Municipal Council into a service oriented institution, instead of making it a political bureau.

Mayor Bensouda was speaking on Monday during his inauguration alongside 19 elected councilors within the Municipality at the KMC ground.

“I cannot promise to turn the council into the perfect metropolis within this time, but I will promise you that, I shall turn the council into a service oriented institution for all residents of KMC. The institution and the Office of the Lord Mayor shall no longer be a political bureau. Instead, the office shall be a place of hard work where professionals come to serve the municipality and deliver the much needed services to its people. I shall wake up every day and give all my efforts, determination and commitment towards this end,” he added.

Musa Bah, the councilor for Latrikunda German was unanimously elected by councilors to serve as the deputy mayor of KMC, effect yesterday 21st May 2018.

He maintained that in next three years and nine months, he would ensure that the municipality is well equipped with qualified, dedicated and professional workforce.

“As a priority, we will commence a human resource and capacity audit of all the council’s administration, management and support staff to determine the capacity gaps to be filed to deliver on its promise.”

“We shall focus on the development of council bye-laws and rebuild the audit, compliance and enforcement capacity of the council. Key to my plans will be a substantial assessment of all revenue generating sectors and the adequacy of the current budget, collection mechanisms and financial accounting tools and procedures to drive towards fulfilling my D1 Billion revenue target. We shall focus on strengthening and ensuring that revenue is collected and accounted for in a transparent manner, thereby reducing leakages and increasing confidence of the residents within the municipality,” he added.

To this end, Mayor Bensouda thanked the outgoing interim chairman, Bakary Jammeh and his team for their achievements in the past three months.

He also paid glowing tribute to the party officials of the United Democratic Party (UDP) for choosing him as the flag bearer in the just concluded mayoral elections; the UDP campaign team, all chairmen, women and Yaay kompins, supporters and all the residents of KMC.
