Tuesday defeated Gunjur 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the regular
time quarterfinal played at the
Independence Stadium in Bakau to advance to the 2018 Simlex and Gambia Football
Federation sponsored Super Nawettan semifinal.
The Father Gough Sports Complex boys now finished top spot in group A with 7 points after three group matches before their last eight clashes with Gunjur, who finished runners up in group C with 5 points after three matches.
Both zones made a super start to their quarterfinal encounter and pile pressure on each other to win the quarterfinal tie to advance to the semifinal after their astounding performances in the group phase.
Lamin Jallow could have opened the tally for Gunjur in the 17th minute of the game but his effort was denied by the woodwork.
Manjai also came very close to opening the scores through winger Abdourahaman Jobe in the 33rd minute of the game but his shoot went over the cross bar.
Manjai opened the scores striker Ousman Tamba in the 36th minute of the game after capitalizing on Mustapha Jassey’s brilliant cross to fire home the opener for Manjai boys.
Gunjur fought back for an equaliser and created some goal scoring chances but failed to utilize on their limited chances thus the first half ended 1-0 in favour of Manjai.
Upon resumption of the game, Gunjur reinforce themselves and controlled the midfield, crafting goal scoring opportunities.
Winger Mbemba Fatty alias Iniesta leveled for matters for Gunjur in the 65th minute of the game from an excellent header from substitute Alasanna Marong’s wonderful free-kick to cancel Ousman Tamba’s first half strike to make it 1-1.
This pushed the game into a post-match penalty shootout, which ended 4-3 in favour of Manjai.
Today’s quarterfinal fixture will feature defending champions Sukuta against Brikama while Serrekunda East will take on Jarra and Kiang United in the other quarterfinal tomorrow at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.
