Man slammed with six counts of alleged fraud

A man called Modou Ceesay was recently arraigned before Magistrate Wilson of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court, charged with six counts of obtaining money by false pretence.

He denied the charge and was granted court bail of D700,000 with a Gambian surety who must deposit an ID card.

Hearing continues on 1 February 2016.

Count one stated that on 31 March 2015, at the International Business College at Kotu, in the Kanifing Municipality, he, by false pretence and with intent to defraud, obtained from one Innocent Okafor D138,000 on the pretext that he would secure him, Mariama and Omar Bangura scholarship at the Copenhagen Business College in Dermark, which representation was false and knew it to be false.

The bill of indictment on count two read that in July 2015, at the same college, by false pretence and with intent to defraud, he obtained from one Chidera Steven Alakwe D52,700 on the pretext of securing him a scholarship at the Belarus State Economics University, which representation was false and knew it to be false.

On count three, he was alleged to have in the month of June 2015, at the same college, by false pretence and with intent to defraud, obtained from one Nyima Camara D157,000, on the pretext of securing her and her daughter scholarship at the Belarus State Economics University, which representation was false and knew it to be false.

Count four indicated that in August 2015, at the same college, by false pretence and with intent to defraud, he obtained from one Pa Modou Sarr D75,000 on the pretext of securing him scholarship at the Belarus State Economics University, which representation was false and knew it to be false.

Count five stated that in June 2015, at the same college, by false pretence and with intent to defraud, he obtained from one Abdoulie Savage D85,000 on the pretext of securing him scholarship at the Belarus State Economics University, which representation was false and knew it to be false.

Count six stated that in June 2015, at the same college, by false pretence and with intent to defraud, he obtained from one Foday Jatta D75,000, on the pretext of securing him scholarship at the Belarus Economics University, which representation was false and he knew it to be false.
