was not an easy day at the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission
(TRRC) on Monday, 5 August, 2019, when a witness seemed to ramble on each
question asked by the lead counsel at the sitting which lasted over six hours.
The witness, Ismaila Jammeh who had admitted participating in torturing and killing of the then State Guard Commander Almamo Manneh, had also denied witnessing, participating and executing other officers like Daba Marenah, Malafi Corr. The ex “jungler” maintained innocence of never witnessing other junglers’ killings for ex-president Jammeh.
Jungler Jammeh’s best answers to any question asked him by Essa Faal, TRRC’s lead counsel were: “I was not there.” “I don’t remember” or claimed to be a junior person/officer in the army, and in the end he concluded by claiming not to be a “perfect soldier.”
In his concluding remarks, Ismaila Jammeh who was onetime an orderly to former President Jammeh said “man is not perfect, when God created human beings, He said human beings are not perfect and actually nobody is 100 per cent perfect that’s category I fall, I am not perfect.”
Making use of the opportunity accorded to him, he begged for forgiveness as he has forgiven everybody. “Man is not perfect, I am incomplete, a human being is incomplete, I apologise for the wrongdoing.”
“I am asking for forgiveness from the whole Gambia especially the Almamou family who I worked with. I am a soldier who is not perfect. I intended to secure my country so that we can have a peaceful Gambia, that’s what takes me there and my intention was not to kill anybody.”
