Honourable Kebba K. Barrow, Kombo South lawmaker and the majority leader of National Assembly said that legislators are impressed by the performance of The Gambia Revenue Authority.

The Gambia’s revenue authority last year collected a total revenue of D8.4 billion – surpassing the annual target by 4% or D349.6 million dalasis.

Hon. Barrow attributed this success to the leadership of the Commissioner General Yankuba Darboe.

Speaking to The Point in an interview, the majority leader described this as worthy cause, saying GRA’s management deserves commendation for this remarkable achievement.

Barrow recalled that GRA first collected D800,000,000 within a single month in 2018, and this time exceeding the government revenue target of D8.05 billion  to D9.13 billion. He therefore described it as an unprecedented achievement, saying it’s a clear indication of commitment from the management.

He advised that GRA management needs to ensure that they have a robust check and balance to ensure that there are no leakages in collecting tax toward the development of this country.

He said there is also a need for the money to be well spent and ensure that it reflects on key development programmes of the country.

Honourable Barrow emphasised that the payment of tax to government is very key, saying it is one of ways to generate income internally. He added that the most important thing is to ensure that there are sound financial management structures put in place in all those ministries and department or agency.

He said therefore taxes that are collected should reach the poorest or marginalised members of our communities.
